As it is a highly controversial subject matter, the question that is upraised is that whether it is a genuine image of India under the colonization written from an un-biased perspective or something that is written just to let out the grudges of the author, and moreover, is it a failed or a successful representation of the Indians. This novel is one of his masterpieces and a subject of literary criticism from many perspectives.
The discussion of the representation of the colonial rule has been carried out since ages. E.M Forster’s novel A Passage to India reveals the true picture of colonialism in the subcontinent. Paul Scott’s cycle of novels The Raj Quartet depicts the last years of the Raj and the dawn of Indian independence, but also depicts the kinds of miscommunication and misunderstanding across cultural and racial lines that were a product of colonialism.Colonialism has often been regarded as the struggle, policy or practice of acquiring full or partial political control over another country, occupying it and exploiting it economically.
Rudyard Kipling’s Kim similarly portrays the British Raj, though in a more positive light. Ahmed Ali’s novel Twilight in Delhi also deals with colonialism in India, and was later referenced by Forster. The title of A Passage to India comes from Walt Whitman’s Leaves of Grass.
Like other Modernists he was interested in the chaos and dramatic shifts of the dramatically changing world of the second and third decades of the 20th century, but he focused on portraying the chaos of the modern world through his situations and imagery rather than stylistic innovation.
